“The sun had barely risen in the morning when the bell rang, followed by an insistent knocking on the door.

“That is Seymon, I just know it,” Martin said, opening his eyes. “The bell ringing and the knock is his.”

Prince answered the door. We heard him slap hands with whoever it was.

“Hey Lil Bro’, what’s up?” said the visitor. I immediately recognized Seymon’s voice and started to get up and put clothes on.

“Hi, Seymon,” Prince replied, “you on your way to school?”

“Yes, but I need to speak with Mommy right now.”

“I will get her.” Prince came and knocked on the bedroom door.

“Mommy, are you up?”

“I am coming Prince!” I replied. I finished tying the knot of my robe sash and went out into the hallway. Seymon had come to join Prince outside the door and he gave me a hug.

“Good morning Mommy,” he said.

“Good morning,” I replied.

Prince stood there watching the interchange between us, Seymon turned to him, “Excuse me Lil Bro’. I would like to talk to Mommy in private please.”

“Sure,” Prince said. He went to his room and closed the door. We could hear the music as he turned on his boom-box.

“I didn’t have any nightmares last night,” Seymon said. “Danielle and I got on our knees and prayed to God to help me sleep. I think he heard us because I slept like a baby in a crib.”

“Oh, wonderful,” I said. “Well, God is the doctor, the psychiatrist; the man takes care of all that ails you. I am glad you slept peacefully.”

“We’ll pray every night before we go to bed from now on.’

“I am so proud of you for listening to me,” I told him.

“If I had listened a long time ago I could have avoided being killed the way I was. You said ‘Seyoum go to school’. If I had been in school I couldn’t have listened to that informer and all his lies.”

“Well you now have another opportunity to do things right this time,” I told him.

We had been keeping our voices low as not to wake Martin but he now came out of the room to join us. Seymon reached over to shake his hand.

“Good morning and goodbye stepfather,” he said. “I’ve got to get to school.”

“Okay Seymon,” Martin said. “Have a blessed day.”

Seymon went out and closed the door behind him. We could hear the car start up and leave.

“You know,” Martin said turning to me, “Seyoum used to call me step dad.”

“Yes, I remember,” I replied.

“That boy is so much like Seyoum it is hard to tell the difference between the two. No really, he is like the reincarnation of Seyoum.”

“Now you are overreacting maybe,” I commented.

“But that boy is so similar to Seyoum it is uncanny. Don’t you see it?”

“Martin,” I said, looking him in the eye, “I have no idea what you mean. That boy is not Seyoum. Please let’s stop talking about Seyoum.”

He must have noticed the tears in my eyes for he pulled me into his arms. “I didn’t mean to upset you.
